UK Expansion Worker Visa (Global Business Mobility) – September 2025 Update

Overview

  • Part of Global Business Mobility route

  • For overseas businesses not yet trading in UK to      establish branch/subsidiary

  • Temporary setup phase only      (not for ongoing operations)

 

Eligibility Requirements

Business Requirements:

  • Overseas business not yet trading in UK

  • Must be overseas entity planning UK branch/subsidiary

Personal Qualifications:

  • Existing employee of overseas      business

  • Must be senior manager or specialist expert

Work Experience:

  • ≥12 months employment with      overseas employer outside UK

  • Exemptions (no 12-month      requirement):

    • Salary >£73,900

    • Japanese national working for Japanese company

    • Australian national/permanent resident working for Australian       company

Job Arrangements:

  • Valid Certificate of Sponsorship

  • Role on eligible occupations list

 

Visa Duration & Restrictions

  • Initial visa12 months maximum      (CoS period + 14 days)

  • Extensions12 months (one      extension possible)

  • Total maximum stay2 years

  • Global Business Mobility limit5      years across all relevant visas in any 6-year period

Key Restrictions:

  •  No settlement pathway

  •  No secondary      employment

  •  Cannot change jobs (without      visa update)

  •  No public funds

 

Salary Requirement

  • £52,500/year OR going      rate for role (whichever higher)

 

Costs & Financial Requirements

  • Application fee£319

  • Immigration Health Surcharge£1,035/year

  • Maintenance funds£1,270 (held      28 days before application)

  • Exempt if UK resident for 12+      months

 

Application Process & Documents

  • Earliest application: 3 months      before work start date

  • Processing times:

    • Outside UK: ~3 weeks

    • Inside UK: ~8 weeks

Required Documents:

  • Valid passport

  • Certificate of Sponsorship reference number

  • Experience evidence (if required): 12 months payslips/bank      statements

  • Financial evidence

 

Work Rights & Restrictions

Permitted:

  • Work described in Certificate of Sponsorship

  • Study

  • Volunteer

  • Bring eligible dependants

Not Permitted:

  • Change employer/job nature (without visa update)

  • Secondary employment

  • Settlement applications

  • Public funds

 

Visa Maintenance

Extension Requirements:

  • Continue working for same employer

  • Same role and SOC code

  • Within maximum stay limits

Role Changes: Must update visa if SOC code changes

Switching to This Visa:

  • Possible from most UK visas (except Visitor/Short-term      Student/Seasonal Worker etc.)

 

Dependants

  • Eligible: Spouse/civil partner/unmarried      partner/children under 18

  • Relationship evidence:      Marriage/birth certificates or 2+ years cohabitation proof

  • Additional funds required:

    • Partner: £285

    • First child: £315

    • Each additional child: £200

  • Rights: Work (except professional      sport) and study

 

Important Notes

  • Critical business requirement:      Overseas business must not be trading in UK

  • Development phase only: Switch to      other visas (e.g., Senior/Specialist Worker) once trading begins

  • Sponsorship licence: Overseas      business needs UK sponsorship licence

  • Sensitive research: ATAS      certificate may be required for PhD-level sensitive subjects
