Get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to Visit the UK – September 2025 Update

What is an ETA?

An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) allows the holder to visit the UK for tourism, family visits, or certain other purposes for up to 6 months.

  • Cost: £16

  • Third-party websites may charge higher fees – beware of      imitation sites mimicking government services.

  • An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK.

 

Who Needs an ETA?

Most visitors to the UK require either an ETA or a visa, depending on their nationality and purpose of travel. Travellers from specific countries (including the EU, US, Australia, Canada) typically need an ETA rather than a visa.

Exemptions

You do not need an ETA if you are:

  • A British or Irish passport holder

  • Holding a valid UK visa or permission to live/work/study in the      UK

  • Transiting through a UK airport without passing through      border control (confirm with your airline)

  • A British Overseas Territories citizen or British National      (Overseas) passport holder

  • An Irish resident travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or      the Isle of Man

  • A child with a France-UK school trip form

  • Exempt from immigration control

 

Family/Group Applications

  • Each traveller (including      infants and children) requires a separate ETA

  • You can apply on behalf of others

 

Dual Nationals

If you hold both British/Irish and another nationality:

  • You cannot apply for an ETA

  • Enter the UK using your:

Ø  Valid British or Irish passport, OR

Ø  Other valid passport containing a 'certificate of entitlement'

 

Travelling from Ireland

  • ETA not required if arriving      from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man

  • Visa still required if you're      a national of a country that requires one

Required documents when entering from Ireland:

  • Aged 16+: Original Irish-issued      document (e.g., Irish driving licence, residence permit, medical card)

  • Under 16: No proof of Irish      residence required

 

Permitted Uses

  • Tourism, family visits, business, or short-term study (≤6      months)

  • Permitted paid engagements

  • Creative Worker visa concession activities (≤3 months)

  • Transiting through UK airports with border control (confirm      with airline)

Not Permitted

  • Staying longer than 6 months

  • Working for a UK company or being self-employed (except      permitted engagements)

  • Claiming public funds

  • Living in the UK through frequent/continuous visits

  • Marriage/civil partnership (apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa      instead)

 

How to Apply

  • Cost: £16 (non-refundable)

  • Apply: Official GOV.UK website or UK ETA      app

  • Required:

Ø  Valid passport

Ø  Email address

Ø  Payment method (credit/debit card, Apple/Google Pay)

Ø  Digital photo of applicant's face

Application Methods

  1. UK ETA app (Google Play/App      Store): Scan passport and face using phone camera

  2. Online: Upload passport copy and      facial photo

 

After Applying

  • Decision usually within 24 hours via email

  • Email includes 16-digit ETA reference number

  • Contact UKVI if no decision after 3 working days

  • ETA is linked to your passport – no physical document needed

 

Validity

  • 2 years OR until passport      expiry (whichever is sooner)

  • Multiple entries allowed during validity period
