UK Transit Visa (Visa to pass through the UK in transit) – September 2025 Update

Official application link: https://www.gov.uk/transit-visa

Do You Need a Transit Visa?

You may need a transit visa if passing through the UK en route to another country.
You do not need a transit visa if you already hold one of the following:

  • Valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

  • EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit

  • Home Office travel document (e.g., for refugees or stateless      persons)

  • Standard Visitor Visa

  • Marriage Visitor Visa

Types of Transit Visas

1. Direct Airside Transit Visa

  • For: Passengers transferring      between flights without passing through UK border control (remaining      in the international "sterile" area of the airport, not      collecting baggage, and not changing airports).

  • Fee: £39 (may vary slightly by      country of application).

  • Exemptions: Holders of valid      visas/permits listed above.

2. Transit Visitor Visa

  • For: Passengers who must      pass through UK border control (e.g., to collect/recheck baggage,      change airports) and will:

Ø  Leave the UK within 48 hours

Ø  Not work or study during their stay

  • Fee: £70 (may vary slightly by      country of application).

If you need to stay longer than 48 hours or transit frequently over an extended period, apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.

Special Cases

  • Travel to Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or Ireland: A Standard Visitor Visa is usually required unless you hold a      valid visa for those territories or a specific Irish Biometric Visa.

  • Frequent transit: Apply for a long-term      Standard Visitor Visa (valid 2, 5, or 10 years) if transiting      regularly. Each stay limited to 6 months.

How to Apply

  • Apply online for either      transit visa type.

  • Required documents:

Ø  Valid passport/travel document

Ø  Proof of permission to enter your destination country (e.g., residence permit, visa) if not a citizen

Ø  Confirmed onward travel evidence (e.g., flight tickets, boarding passes)

  • Biometrics: Provide fingerprints      and photo at a visa application centre.

  • Processing time: Typically 3      weeks. Priority services may be available depending on location.

  • Decision: You will be notified by      email with next steps.

Summary

  • Remaining airside: Direct Airside      Transit Visa (£39)

  • Entering the UK ≤48 hours: Transit      Visitor Visa (£70)
