Overview

  • Short-term work visa for cultural exchange through      living/working/traveling in UK

  • No employer sponsorship required

  • Non-extendable for most      nationalities (exceptions apply)

 

Eligibility Requirements

Age Requirements:

  • Most participating countries (including      Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Taiwan): 18-30 years

  • Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea: 18-35 years

  • Can apply before turning 18 (must be 18 when visa starts)

  • Can apply if within age limit at application date (even if      older when visa starts)

Nationality Requirements:

  • Must hold passport from:

    • Age 35 limit: Australia, Canada,       New Zealand, South Korea

    • Age 30 limit: Andorra, Iceland,       Japan, Monaco, San Marino, Uruguay

    • Ballot system: Hong Kong SAR,       Taiwan

    • British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories       Citizens, British Nationals (Overseas)

Financial Requirements:

  • £2,530 personal savings

  • Held for 28 consecutive days

  • 28-day period must end within 31 days before online      application

Other Restrictions:

  • No dependent children

  • No previous YMS visa (except extensions)

 

Visa Rights & Restrictions

Permitted:

  • ✓ Most employment

  • ✓ Self-employment/business (rented premises only, equipment      ≤£5,000, no employees)

  • ✓ Study (some courses require ATAS certificate)

Not Permitted:

  • ✗ Professional sportsperson/coach

  • ✗ Public funds

  • ✗ Bring dependants

  • ✗ Extend (except Australia/Canada/New Zealand citizens)

 

Costs & Application Process

Fees:

  • Application: £319

  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £776/year (£1,552      for 2 years)

When to Apply: Up to 6 months before travel

How to Apply:

  • Apply online

  • Verify identity via app or biometric appointment

Processing Time: Usually 3 weeks

Required Documents:

  • Valid passport

  • Bank statements showing £2,530

  • TB certificate (if required)

  • Country-specific documents:

    • Hong Kong/Taiwan: Ballot success confirmation

    • Andorra/Iceland/Uruguay: Police certificate (last 6 months)

    • San Marino: Foreign Ministry reference letter

 

Visa Extension

Eligibility: Australia/Canada/New Zealand citizens only

Duration: 1 year

Conditions:

  • Must be in UK

  • Must hold valid YMS visa

Costs: £319 application + £776 IHS

Processing: Up to 8 weeks

 Cannot leave Common Travel Area while extension pending

 

Important Notes

  • Purpose: Cultural exchange      experience, not long-term immigration route

  • Verify age limits and ballot requirements based on nationality

  • Financial evidence is common refusal reason – ensure strict      compliance

  • UK-born children: Not automatically      British – require separate dependant visa application
