Overseas Domestic Worker Visa – September 2025 Update

Overview

  • Short-term visa for domestic workers accompanying employers on      temporary UK visits

  • Non-extendable with no      settlement pathway

  • Employer-dependent – cannot      work independently

 

Eligibility Requirements

Personal Requirements:

  • Aged 19 or over

  • Resident outside UK

  • ≥12 months continuous      employment with current employer

  • Can support yourself without public funds

Employment Conditions:

  • Full-time domestic worker in      private household

  • Living with employer or in household they regularly use

  • Traveling with employer, their spouse, or children

Employer Requirements:

  • Employer must be either:

    • British citizen normally residing overseas, OR

    • Foreign citizen visiting UK for ≤6 months

  • Must pay at least UK National Minimum Wage

 

Visa Duration & Restrictions

  • Maximum stay6 months (must      leave UK after)

  • Key restrictions:

    • No extensions

    • No settlement

    • No long-term residence

    • Work only as domestic worker

    • No public funds

    • Can change employers within 6-month period

 

Application Process & Costs

  • Application fee£682

  • Earliest application: 3 months      before travel

  • Processing: Usually 3 weeks (priority      services available)

  • Apply online + biometric      appointment

 

Required Documents

  • Valid passport (with blank page for visa)

  • Financial evidence (last 6 months bank statements/payslips)

  • Completed Domestic Worker Appendix (signed by      worker and employer)

  • Employer letter confirming:

    • Job role

    • Length of employment

    • Permanent employee status

  • Employment evidence (one of):

    • Payslips/bank statements showing salary payments

    • Tax documents

    • Health insurance payments

    • Employment contract

    • Work visa/residence permit from current country

  • Certified translations for non-English/Welsh documents

 

Special Rules (Pre-6 April 2012 Applicants)

More flexible rules for existing visa holders:

  •  Extensions: Every 12 months

  •  Settlement: After 5 years continuous UK work

  •  Dependants: Spouse/children under 18

  •  Change employers within visa validity

Settlement Requirements:

  • 5 years continuous full-time work in UK

  • Absences ≤180 days in any 12-month period

  • CEFR B1 English + Life in UK test

  • Financial self-sufficiency

  • Fees: Extension £1,321 / Settlement      £3,029

 

Employment Rights & Protection

You are entitled to:

  • At least National Minimum Wage

  • Protection from excessive working hours

  • Agreed holiday pay

  • Proper notice period if employment ends

Legal recourse available through employment tribunals/civil courts if rights violated

 

Protection for Modern Slavery/Trafficking Victims

If confirmed as victim of forced labour/human trafficking:

  • Can apply to stay in UK for up to 2 years

  • No application fee

  • Can work as domestic worker without pre-arranged job offer

  • Can change employment during this period

  • Must apply within 28 days of confirmation
