A1.3 eVisa¶
UK eVisa (Electronic Visa) – September 2025 Update
Key Updates
BRP cards were officially phased out on 1 January 2025. Since 15 July 2025, the UK government has replaced BRPs with eVisas. If you still hold a valid BRP, you must transition to an eVisa before its expiry date.
All online visa applications now require a UKVI account. Follow the official process to link your eVisa after approval.
Though not always checked, it is recommended to carry a printed copy of your eVisa for airlines or border control. Both digital and printed versions are acceptable.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa (electronic visa) is a digital immigration status introduced on 15 July 2025. It securely stores your immigration details online and allows you to:
View your visa status and conditions
Prove your right to live, work, or study in the UK
How to Use Your eVisa
1. Set Up Your UKVI Account
Scroll to the bottom and click "Create a UKVI account"
Required for registration:
A mobile number and email address for future logins
One of the following document combinations:
Valid passport + visa application reference (GWF or UAN number)
Valid passport + Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) number
Expired BRP (can be used for registration up to 18 months after expiry)
After creating your account, you will be guided to:
Verify your identity using the official smartphone app
Link your account to your eVisa
Alternative verification methods are available if you:
Do not have a valid passport/BRP
Cannot use a smartphone
2. Check if You Already Have a UKVI Account
You likely already have a UKVI account if you have ever:
Used the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app to verify your identity
Received a confirmation email after creating an account for a visa application
Replaced a physical immigration document (e.g., BRP) with an eVisa
Applied to the EU Settlement Scheme
Do not create duplicate accounts. If unsure, check by logging in at:

Hold certain work or study visas for 6 months or less
You do not need an eVisa if you are:
Visiting with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Holding a Standard Visitor Visa
Under the EU Settlement Scheme family permit
Exempt from immigration control (e.g., diplomats or those with "right of abode")
Granted residence in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man
Using Your eVisa in Practice
1. Proving Your Immigration Status
Log in to view your eVisa and generate a share code
Provide the share code to employers, landlords, or other authorised parties to prove your right to work/rent
Important notes on share codes:
Each purpose requires a separate share code (e.g., one for employment, another for renting)
Select the correct category when generating the code ("why you need a share code")
Codes are valid for 90 days and can be reused multiple times within that period for the same purpose
New codes can be generated anytime after expiry
2. Traveling with Your eVisa
Link your passport/travel document to your eVisa
Use your eVisa for entry and exit at the UK border
