Apply as a Child to Join or Stay with a Close Relative in the UK – September 2025 Update

Overview

A special visa category for children without adequate care, allowing you to come to or remain in the UK to live with a close relative who can and will care for you.

 

Eligibility Requirements

You must meet ALL criteria:

About the Child:

  • Under 18 years old at time of application

  • No other family members in home country can support or care for      you

  • Not living independently (e.g., not married/haven't established      own family)

About Your UK Relative:

  • Must be close relative (grandparent, sibling,      step-parent, aunt, uncle) - NOT parent

  • Must hold protection status (refugee or      humanitarian protection)

  • Cannot be British citizen or      settled in UK (with ILR)

  • Must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support you      without public funds

⚠️ If relative is British/settled: Apply for standard Family visa instead

 

Costs

Application Fees:

  • Outside UK: £424

  • Inside UK: £1,321

Immigration Health Surcharge (if applying inside UK OR staying >6 months):

  • Under 18: £776 per year

  • Total depends on relative's UK permission length

Fee Exemptions: Available if unable to afford fees - provide financial evidence (bank statements, income/expenditure details)

 

Required Documents

Identity Proof:

  • Valid passport (preferred) OR expired passport/travel document,      ID card, driving licence

Relationship Evidence:

  • Birth certificates

  • Family photographs

  • Personal statements from child and relative

  • Communication records (calls, emails, letters)

  • Money transfer records

  • DNA test results (Home Office-approved lab, self-funded)

Financial Capability Evidence:

  • Charity/local authority funding details

  • Bank statements (last 6 months)

  • Monthly income and expenditure details

 

How to Apply

  • Outside UK: Apply online +      biometric appointment at visa application centre

  • Inside UK: Complete FLR(P) form +      post to specified address + biometric appointment at UKVCAS

 

After Applying & Visa Rights

Processing Time: Outside UK applications usually decided within 12 weeks of biometrics

Visa Length: Matches your relative's visa validity exactly (maximum 5 years)

eVisa: Issued if staying longer than 6 months

Rights:

  • ✓ Study in UK

  • ✓ Travel abroad and return to UK

  • ✓ Apply for settlement when relative does

  • ✗ Usually cannot claim most public funds

 

Applying for Settlement

Eligible when ALL conditions met:

  • Living in UK with this visa

  • Currently in UK

  • Relative has obtained settlement OR applying simultaneously

  • Still not living independently

  • Relative can prove ability to support you until adulthood
