Overview
Introduced January 2021
No job offer required – can seek employment after arrival
Settlement pathway: Eligible for ILR after 5 years continuous residence → British citizenship
Flexible duration: 2.5 years or 5 years initially (unlimited extensions)
Eligibility Requirements
Main Applicant:
Aged 18+
British National (Overseas) citizen OR adult child of BNO citizen (born on/after 1 July 1997)
Residence Requirements:
Outside UK: Permanent residence in Hong Kong
Inside UK: Permanent residence in UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Hong Kong
Eligible Family Members:
Spouse/civil partner/unmarried partner (≥2 years proven relationship)
Children/grandchildren under 18
Adult dependant relatives requiring long-term personal care
Costs & Financial Requirements
Application Fees:
2.5 years: £193 per person
5 years: £268 per person
Immigration Health Surcharge:
Adult: 2.5 years £2,587.5 / 5 years £5,175
Child: 2.5 years £1,940 / 5 years £3,880
Financial Evidence:
Proof of 6 months' living costs in UK
Examples:
Single adult: ~£2,000
Couple + 1 child: ~£3,100
Accepted sources: Savings, income, UK job offer (internal transfer only), third-party support
Exempt if UK resident for 12+ months

Relationship proof (marriage/birth certificates)
TB certificate (if required)
Visa Rights & Restrictions
Permitted:
✓ Work (except professional sportsperson/coach)
✓ Study (schools/universities)
Not Permitted:
✗ Most public funds
Exception: Specific financial hardship circumstances (homelessness/inability to meet essential needs)
Settlement & Citizenship
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR):
After 5 years continuous residence
Absences ≤180 days in any 12-month period
Life in UK test + CEFR B1 English (ages 18-64)
Fee: £3,029 per person
British Citizenship:
Eligible 1 year after obtaining ILR
Important Notes
Processing time: Usually 12 weeks (priority services available)
Travel restriction: Cannot leave Common Travel Area while application pending
Family applications: Dependants apply separately using main applicant's reference number
Refusal impact:
Main applicant refusal → all dependants refused
Successful main applicant + failed dependant → main applicant can travel, failed dependant receives IHS refund
