Study English in the UK (Short-term Study Visa) – September 2025 Update

1. Visa Purpose & Key Details
Purpose: For English language courses between 6-11 months duration
Course length:
≤6 months: Apply for Standard Visitor visa
11 months: Apply for Student visa
Stay duration: Full course length + 30 days (maximum 11 months total)
Costs:
Application fee: £214
Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 (access to NHS services)
Important Restrictions
❌ Cannot study other courses or change course
❌ Cannot study at state schools
❌ Cannot work (paid/unpaid, including work placements)
❌ Cannot extend this visa
❌ Cannot bring dependants
❌ Cannot claim most benefits or state pension
2. Eligibility Requirements
Aged 16 or over
Proof of acceptance onto English language course only (6-11 months duration)
Course provided by accredited institution
Sufficient funds to support yourself without working/claiming benefits
Can pay return/onward journey
Additional requirements for under 18s:
Arrangements for travel and accommodation in UK
Parental/guardian consent
3. Course Requirements
Must be provided by accredited institution:
UK institutions: Hold student sponsorship licence OR valid accreditation from:
Accreditation UK
British Accreditation Council
Ofsted
Other designated bodies
Overseas institutions (if completing part of degree programme):
Accredited in home country
UK course ≤50% of total programme
Course equivalent to UK degree level
4. Required Documents
Essential:
Valid passport/travel document
Financial evidence (last 6 months bank statements/payslips)
UK accommodation address and travel plans
Course payment proof or sufficient funds
Additional documents:
Tuberculosis test results (if applicable)
Parent/guardian contact details (under 18s)
Certified translations for non-English/Welsh documents
Course confirmation: Offer letter with course name, duration, fees (including accommodation)
Additional requirements for under 18s:
Travelling alone:
Written consent from both parents/guardians covering:
Visa application
UK accommodation and care arrangements
Travel to UK
Proof of suitable UK accommodation including:
Caregiver's name/date of birth/address
Relationship details
Written consent to provide care
Special cases:
Disabilities: Notify local authority
Private fostering (>28 days with non-relative): Must provide local authority response if possible
Travelling with adult:
Provide adult's details in application (max 2 adults)
Adult's name printed on visa - refusal if arrive without them
Adults must apply separately for their own visas
5. Application Process
Apply online before travelling to UK
Earliest application: 3 months before travel date
Biometrics appointment at visa application centre required
Processing time: Usually 3 weeks after application and document submission
Priority service: Available for faster decision (extra fee)
After applying:
Decision notified by email
Refunds: Only if UKVI hasn't started processing application
