Installing home security cameras in the UK: Can cameras brought from China be used?
Reminder: If you don’t want to purchase monitoring services or install a security camera yourself in the UK, you can buy alarm stickers to attach to doors and windows. When we were in the UK, the police gave us a few for free. Alternatively, infrared motion sensors are also a good option

Due to the current special circumstances, some parents want to buy security cameras for their children to take to the UK. They sent private messages to Shishengmiao, wanting to know if cameras bought in China can be used abroad. Shishengmiao didn’t use any home security cameras in the rented house in the UK—aside from cameras in schools, apartments, shopping malls, etc., this is the first time encountering questions about home security cameras. So, can cameras purchased in China be used in the UK?
Shishengmiao’s answer: There are several types of home security cameras bought in China. Domestic versions cannot be taken abroad for use, but some overseas versions can.
Reminder from Shishengmiao: Not every country allows direct installation of security cameras—some require applying for a surveillance camera license. Currently, the UK does not have a mandatory ban on installing home security cameras, but they must be used within reasonable limits and must not violate others’ privacy.
Suggestion from Shishengmiao: There’s no need to bring security cameras from China to the UK. You can buy surveillance equipment both in physical stores and online in the UK—it’s convenient, comprehensive, and not very expensive. If you choose a paid monitoring service company, you don’t even need to buy the equipment separately; the company will handle everything as a package.
Generally speaking, most major streets, schools, student apartments, shopping malls, etc., in most areas of the UK are equipped with surveillance cameras. However, compared to China, the UK has far fewer surveillance cameras—especially in slightly remote schools in towns or villages, there are basically not many cameras. If you rent a house alone (whether a detached house, terraced house, etc.), there are usually no surveillance cameras. For apartments, it depends on the type: some only have cameras at the main gate, with no cameras in corridors or other areas.
So, if you live in a detached/terraced house or want to install a home security camera, how to install one in the UK?
There are generally two types of home surveillance systems in the UK:
This is a service-based option. You purchase a service from a monitoring company, which will install the cameras and provide corresponding services (including handling emergencies). It requires an annual fee. There are many monitoring service companies in the UK, with varying prices and service offerings.
The advantage is that the company handles installation, monitoring, and all subsequent matters (such as maintenance and upgrades) for you.
This means purchasing, installing, testing, and monitoring the cameras yourself.
Most current surveillance systems are wireless and high-definition. Wireless systems are more convenient than wired ones and cheaper in the long run (one-time payment with no subsequent fees for most cases), so most people choose self-installed systems.
If you’re buying cameras yourself, here are the recommended features:
High definition: 1080p is recommended, with a minimum of 720p.
Wireless: Recommended for convenience (no need for wiring).
Night vision: This feature is extremely important.
Standard angle (narrower range): Choose cameras with adjustable angles or 130° wide angles for areas like doors, garages, or gardens. A standard angle shows objects and people normally without distortion, and no need for constant adjustment. You can also install 360° rotating wide-angle cameras in less noticeable places as a backup.
Number of cameras: Depends on your house size. For terraced houses (usually three sides), three cameras (one per side) are sufficient—you can add more (e.g., 3 large outdoor cameras plus small ones on side/inner-facing exterior walls).
Storage: Systems vary—some use cloud storage (paid or free), others use memory cards (choose storage capacity based on your needs). Some allow setting monthly or automatic cyclic deletion. If possible, keep all footage during your study abroad and delete it only when you return to China (this may incur additional costs); otherwise, extend the retention period for recordings.
Reputable brands: Choose well-known, highly rated cameras.
Complex passwords: Set strong passwords and change them regularly.
Installation: If you rent a house (not own it), you must get permission from your landlord or agent first. Installing cameras requires power outlets, wiring, and drilling holes in walls/ceilings—inform the agent/landlord in advance and confirm you will restore the property after moving out.
Two-way audio: Unnecessary for outdoor cameras; optional for indoor use based on needs.
Remote APP control: Optional, but most modern cameras offer this feature.
Waterproof/windproof: Even under eaves, choose cameras that can withstand UK’s frequent, wind-driven rain.
