C4.4 Council Tax Rebate

Government Council Tax Rebate in the UK

Reminder: It is essential to check your letterbox and email inbox every day. It is advisable to check your email inbox several times a day. Here, "letterbox" refers to the receptacle for receiving physical letters, and "email inbox" refers to the digital space for receiving emails.

If the property you live in falls within Council Tax Bands A to D, you will receive a letter. This letter will instruct you to claim a £150 rebate online or at a post office, which is intended to help you cover living expenses.

International students renting accommodation are also eligible to claim this rebate, including those living in student halls. However, the prerequisite is that you must first receive the aforementioned letter. Letters are currently being sent out gradually.

Reminder: If you meet the criteria (living in a property in Council Tax Bands A to D) but have not received the letter, you can apply for the rebate online by yourself.

Why is the UK providing a £150 tax rebate?

It is because the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in energy prices. For instance, the price of natural gas has doubled, which has had a significant impact on UK residents. Therefore, the UK authorities decided to start sending out letters gradually from April 2022 to issue the £150 rebate, helping people cover living-related expenses.

Reminder: Beyond the £150 rebate, additional rebates ranging from approximately £50 to £500 will be issued gradually to eligible individuals. Many international students have already received rebates of several tens of pounds or over £100 prior to this.
