C4.11 How to Hire Academic Dress

Some students have asked ShishengMao (Ten-Litre Cat) about how to book graduation gowns for UK graduation ceremonies—specifically, overseas graduation gowns.

  1. You can rent one. Rentals are usually through institutions      designated by the university, with prices generally starting from £50 and      above. Advance booking is required, and the gown is typically collected on      the day of the graduation ceremony. Graduation gowns vary by university      and are divided into undergraduate, postgraduate (master’s), and doctoral      gowns. Some even differ by major, so some universities have more than 20      colours of graduation gowns.

  2. You can buy one. Prices are roughly £150 and above, and advance      booking is also needed. However, you can receive the gown earlier, and it      will be fully yours. Customisation options like embroidered names are      available. Some university lecturers may advise students to purchase a      gown, or the university may give a free gown to students.

  3. You must buy one. For certain majors at some universities,      students are required to purchase a specific type of undergraduate gown.      These can only be ordered through the university itself, with arrangements      coordinated uniformly by the university.

Regarding the size of graduation gowns: The rental/purchase institution will provide clear size information, and most sizes are fixed (except for customised ones). Generally, for those with a height between 155cm and 162cm, the recommended size is S (equivalent to size 45). It is advisable for everyone to check the gown size details carefully, measure their own body dimensions, and then rent or buy according to their actual needs.

As for the process and requirements of the graduation ceremony, they vary by university. Some involve a handshake, while others use a ceremonial staff or a certificate of honour to lightly touch the student’s cap or another part of their person. For example, graduates of the University of Cambridge in the UK must kneel to receive their degree in accordance with the Trinitarian Formula (a religious ritual). If a student cannot kneel due to religious beliefs or other reasons, they must submit a written application in advance. Once approved, they will not be required to kneel.

Reminder: Most universities have used the same style of graduation gown for many years, but changes can occur at any time—for instance, if the university redesigns the gown. Therefore, you must always adhere to the specific graduation gown requirements set by the university at the time.
