C4.17 Withdrawing Cash with UnionPay Cards¶
How to Withdraw Cash with a China UnionPay Card in the UK?
You can withdraw cash with a China UnionPay card in the UK, but a service fee will apply. Debit cards incur relatively lower withdrawal fees—these fees are mainly charged by local UK banks. The withdrawn GBP is converted at the real-time GBP exchange rate based on China’s Beijing Time, which is also quite cost-effective.
ShishengMao’s reminder: Do not use a credit card for cash withdrawals. Credit card withdrawal fees are much higher, and additional interest will be charged. Therefore, credit cards are better used for direct payments.
In 2009, UnionPay partnered with LINK—the UK’s ATM network—to enable full acceptance of UnionPay cards at local UK ATMs. Nearly all ATMs in the UK with the Link logo accept UnionPay cards, and over 40% of UK ATMs also display the UnionPay logo.
I have personally withdrawn cash with a UnionPay card at ATMs with the Link logo in Coventry, UK. However, there are withdrawal limits. It is best to check your card’s limit first: generally, the daily withdrawal limit is equivalent to 10,000 RMB in GBP. Some bank ATMs may have a lower limit of 500 GBP or 300 GBP, depending on the specific ATM.

Over 40% of ATMs across the UK accept China UnionPay cards for direct GBP cash withdrawals. These include ATMs operated by:
Barclays
Travelex
MoneyCorp

(Note: HSBC ATMs in the UK only accept UnionPay cards issued by HSBC.)

Using UnionPay Cards at UK Merchants
All merchants in the UK displaying the UnionPay logo accept UnionPay cards. Unlike in China, some places do not require a PIN for UnionPay card payments—you only need to sign for the transaction.
Many merchants in the UK accept UnionPay cards even if they do not display the logo. These include:
Some department stores, jewelry and watch shops, and brand boutiques
Airport duty-free shops and hotels
Most merchants at Bicester Village (the outlet shopping center)
It is recommended to confirm with the merchant in advance before making a purchase.
For Dual-Brand Cards
Dual-brand cards refer to cards that display both the UnionPay logo and either a MasterCard or Visa logo. To enjoy UnionPay’s exclusive offers and services, inform the merchant to process the payment via UnionPay.
However, some overseas acquirers use a default transaction route. In such cases, you may not be able to choose UnionPay as the payment method—the system will automatically select one of the card’s brands. Final payment method is subject to the actual transaction result.
