C2.2 Coachcard¶
UK Coachcard
There are also many long-distance coaches in the UK, which serve as a relatively convenient form of public transport. Standard coach fares can be quite expensive, so it's worthwhile to get a Coachcard, which also offers a one-third discount.
There are generally three types of Coachcard available:
Young Person Coachcard (for those aged 16 to 26, or full-time students)
Senior Coachcard (for those aged 60 and over)
Disabled Coachcard (for persons with a disability)

Among international students in the UK, the most commonly applied for coachcard is generally the Young Person Coachcard. This card is primarily for those aged between 16 and 26, or for full-time students in the UK. Besides offering a 1/3 discount on ticket prices, this card also provides a £15 day return fare anywhere in the UK (on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays), and a 15% discount on event and festival travel tickets.
This guide focuses on the Young Person Coachcard. The application process for other coachcards is largely the same, with only the eligibility requirements differing slightly.
Validity Period and Cost of the Coachcard
You can choose a 1-year card for £15 or a 3-year card for £35, plus a £3 postage fee. The card can be renewed upon expiry, provided you still meet the eligibility criteria.
How to Apply for the Young Person Coachcard
First, visit the website [https://www.nationalexpress.com/en], select [Offers], then [Coachcards] from the dropdown. Click on the [Young Person Coachcard] you wish to apply for, and then select [Buy now].
Then, fill in the required details and upload any necessary documents as prompted by the webpage. Proceed with payment and wait for the coachcard to be delivered to your address. Including processing time, delivery typically takes around 7 days. If you haven't received it after 7 days, you can contact the official support for further information.
Besides applying online, you can also purchase the coachcard at official National Express travel shops.
Reminders:
Not all UK coach companies accept this discount; it primarily applies to National Express services.
You must always carry this card with you when using a discounted ticket, as ticket inspectors will ask to see it. If you don't have it, you may be required to pay the full fare, issued a penalty, or in some cases, not be allowed to board the coach.
Using someone else's coachcard to purchase discounted tickets is a serious offence. If discovered, this constitutes identity fraud and can lead to court action, a guilty plea, and a criminal record. Subsequently, for job applications or any situation asking about 'any convictions', you would have to declare 'yes' and explain. Therefore, never use another person's card.
This coachcard cannot be purchased from the driver or from private individuals. However, you can purchase one for someone else via the official website by providing their personal details.
The age range 16 to 26 is inclusive, meaning it includes both 16 and 26-year-olds.
