A3.2 Customs Duty

UK Airport Customs Duty Charge (202510)

During holidays, many people like to visit neighbouring countries such as France, Germany, Italy, etc. Sometimes, you might buy items there that are unavailable in the UK or cheaper than UK prices. In these cases, when returning to the UK, remember to discard receipts and boxes, and avoid having too many of the same item.

It's best to choose arrival times like the middle of the night, and try to avoid entering through Heathrow or Gatwick airports if possible. In recent years, as UK customs has frequently charged duty to Chinese nationals, the likelihood of being selected for checks is higher, often based on your clothing and the brand of your luggage.

When going through border control, try to stay within the crowd. Avoid looking at or making eye contact with officers. At Heathrow, I was stopped for a baggage check immediately after a staff member noticed me looking their way. Crucially, most people selected for checks are of Asian appearance. The officers are often tall and strong but will not help you lift your luggage onto the inspection table; they will wait very patiently for you to manage it yourself, however slowly.

Discrimination can exist anywhere, at any time. A superficial, polite smile does not equal respect or goodwill. Don't have any illusions about them. If you haven't broken any rules, you will be allowed to pass. Items that do not meet requirements will be subject to duty, prohibited items will be confiscated, and for serious violations, you may be taken to a separate room.

Generally, a small quantity of low-value items for personal use won't be taxed. This also includes a few items you are wearing or using, or goods you have declared.

Currently, airports with a high reported probability of not being charged duty include: Manchester and London City.

Reminder: A customs charge isn't just the outstanding tax on the item; it also includes an additional penalty fee.
